Medical practitioner Christian Aminarh has warned that poor hygiene when using sex toys can contribute to recurrent infections.
Dr Aminarh recounted a case in which a patient continued to experience an infection despite treatment. He said health professionals eventually considered whether a sex toy could be contributing to the recurring problem.
According to Dr Aminarh, the patient brought several sex toys to the hospital, which were examined as part of efforts to identify the possible source of the infection.
He said the experience highlighted the importance of proper hygiene when using such products.
Health guidance also recommends cleaning sex toys properly because bacteria can build up on them and contribute to infection. Planned Parenthood advises washing sex toys before and after use, following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, and using condoms on toys when they are shared.
The organisation also advises that anything used around the anus should be washed thoroughly before it comes into contact with the vagina or other genital areas, because bacteria can cause infections.
Dr Aminarh’s comments came during a wider discussion about virginity, sexual behaviour and sexual health. The discussion also challenged the idea that conversations about sexual health should focus only on women. Dr Aminarh said men also need accurate information about sexual health, hygiene, abuse and the emotional pressures associated with sexual performance.
