Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will seek to reinstate Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice should the party win power in the 2028 elections.
Afenyo-Markin made the remarks while describing her 2025 removal as unjust and the result of a “grand conspiracy.” He alleged that the process was flawed and involved certain Supreme Court justices, including current
Justice Torkornoo, appointed Chief Justice in June 2023 under the previous NPP administration, was removed from office in September 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama.
The decision followed a committee inquiry under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution that upheld a petition citing stated misbehaviour, including the alleged misuse of public funds for private family travels.
Her removal marked the first time a sitting Chief Justice under Ghana’s Fourth Republic had been dismissed through this process. It triggered legal challenges by Torkornoo in domestic courts and the ECOWAS Court of Justice; the regional court later dismissed her claims.
The NPP has consistently criticised the removal as politically motivated. Afenyo-Markin’s latest comments reinforce the party’s position that it views the former Chief Justice’s ouster as illegitimate and that it intends to reverse the decision if elected.
The statement comes amid ongoing political debate over judicial independence and the handling of the case ahead of the next general elections.
