Ghana has climbed into the top six gold-producing countries globally after recording a sharp increase in output in 2025, according to the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The country produced 5.94 million ounces of gold last year - about 185 tonnes, a 23.41% rise from the 4.82 million ounces recorded in 2024. The surge allowed Ghana to overtake the United States in the global rankings.
The Chamber reported that the jump was driven largely by a strong performance in the small-scale mining sector. Small-scale production rose by more than 63% to 3.11 million ounces, accounting for over half of the national total and surpassing large-scale mining for the first time in more than a century. Large-scale output edged slightly lower during the same period.
Gold’s contribution to Ghana’s economy also strengthened, with the metal’s share of GDP rising to nearly 10% in 2025. The Chamber has projected further growth in 2026 as reforms and new projects continue to support production.
The figures were presented in the Chamber’s latest annual review and mark Ghana’s highest recorded gold output to date.
