Medical practitioner Dr Chrsitian Aminarh has revealed that there is no medical test that can establish whether a woman has had sexual intercourse.
According to Dr Aminarh, the hymen cannot be used as a reliable measure of virginity. He explained that the hymen is a thin membrane around the vaginal opening and can vary significantly from one person to another when he addressed the topic on the Big Convo segment of the Culture Daily morning show on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9FM.
It can also stretch or tear for reasons unrelated to sexual intercourse, including physical activities and some medical procedures. Dr Aminarh said this makes it medically inaccurate to expect a woman to bleed during her first sexual intercourse as proof that she was a virgin.
“It’s a thin film,” he explained during the discussion, adding that some women may have very little hymenal tissue or may not develop a typical hymen.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) similarly says there is no examination that can prove whether a girl or woman has had vaginal intercourse. It says the appearance of the hymen cannot establish whether someone has had sex.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists also says the presence or absence of a hymen does not indicate virginity.
Dr Aminarh said health professionals can, however, conduct forensic examinations in cases of suspected sexual assault to collect evidence. He distinguished this from so-called virginity testing, saying medicine can investigate sexual violence but cannot scientifically determine a person’s virginity.
WHO, UN Human Rights and UN Women have called for the elimination of virginity testing, describing it as medically unnecessary, potentially harmful and without scientific validity.
