Ghanaian dancehall artiste Dosted Gennah has spoken about the financial difficulties he faced growing up, saying he left home at a young age to work while continuing his education.

Dosted Genna revealed that his family struggled financially while raising six children when he appeared on the UNPACKIN’ segment of the Culture Daily Morning Show on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9 FM.

According to Dosted Gennah, his father had limited income while his mother sold food items to support the family.

He said the situation eventually pushed him to make the difficult decision to leave home and look for work.

“I just had to make a decision on maybe just leave home and go and find some work to do whilst going to school,” he said.

Dosted Gennah said he later moved to the Nsawam area, where he worked as a labourer on construction sites.

He recalled that he could earn about GH¢15 to GH¢20 for a day’s work at the time, depending on the type of construction work he did. The musician said the demands of work sometimes kept him away from school for weeks.

“If I get that GH¢15 or GH¢20, sometimes I can close school for like two weeks without going to school. Just working,” he said.

After making some money, he said, he would return to school before going back home briefly to see his family.

Dosted Gennah said his difficult upbringing later became an important influence on his music, with many of his songs drawing from experiences in his life.

He describes dancehall as a way of expressing those experiences and communicating messages that might otherwise be difficult to put into words.

His story of hardship is also reflected in his musical catalogue. His 2026 EP, Out of The Broken City, contains six tracks, including collaborations with Medikal, J.Derobie, Jupitar, Shane O and Zebee.

Dosted Gennah has also released music with established Ghanaian acts, including Medikal, with whom he previously released Sika Me P3 in 2023.

He says his journey from financial hardship and construction work to professional music has strengthened his determination to succeed in the industry.
