Ghanaian television and radio presenter Yaa Bitha has publicly shared details of her lifelong health condition during an appearance on The Lifestyle Podcast.
In the interview, Bitha described living with a rare congenital defect, identified by viewers and commentators as Müllerian agenesis, also known as MRKH syndrome—that involves the incomplete development of the uterus and upper vagina.
“I have always been a sick child, that’s why I’m like this,” she said.
She revealed that she has undergone eight serious surgeries related to the condition, which typically presents with the absence of menstrual periods despite normal external genitalia, ovaries, and secondary sexual characteristics.
“I’ve had eight surgeries…I was born with a congenital defect that did not allow me to menstruate, I could only pee and nobody’s attention was drawn to it,” she revealed.
According Bitha, a canal had to be created during one of her surgeries with a tube from her uterus to the outside to allow menstruation flow.
Bitha also spoke about the physical and emotional challenges of managing the condition from a young age, emphasizing resilience and her decision to discuss it openly. Supporters on social media praised her strength, with many noting it was the first time they had learned about the condition and calling her journey inspirational.
Bitha, known for her work in media and as the host of The Lockdown on Pluzz 89.9 FM has been recognized for using platforms to discuss personal experiences.
