Santasi Drivers Park Vehicles In Protest Over Fare Arrests

Commercial drivers on the Santasi-Tech and Santasi-Ejisu routes in Kumasi have suspended operations and parked their vehicles in protest against the arrest of colleagues for charging an additional GH¢1 on transport fares.

The action which began on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, has left a number of passengers stranded at the Santasi station.

Drivers say the GH¢1 increase is necessary to offset rising fuel prices and higher operational costs. They note that although the government had proposed a 30 percent fare adjustment, it has not been implemented.

Drivers report that those who charge the extra amount face repeated arrests and fines of GH¢10,000.

One driver stated: “Until the authorities meet us for a peaceful dialogue on the fare issue and stop arresting us and taking GH¢10,000 from us, we will not work.”

Another driver highlighted the financial strain, saying: “Yesterday, my conductor and I made GH¢80 after taking out our sales and fuel expenses. How are we supposed to share that amount? What kind of cheating is this?”

Operators say they will remain off the roads until authorities engage them in discussions and halt the arrests.
