The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed all operators of aboboyaa (motorcycle taxis) and tricycles in the capital to install reflectors on their vehicles and stay off the inner lanes of major highways.
Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced the measures, requiring reflectors to be fitted at the rear and on both sides of the vehicles by the end of August 2026. The directive aims to improve visibility, especially at night or in poor weather, and reduce the risk of road accidents.
Operators must use available side roads instead of the main carriageways of major highways. Where no side roads exist, vehicles must remain clearly visible through the use of reflectors.
The order applies to all aboboyaa and tricycle operators within the Accra metropolis, regardless of the goods or services they carry. Non-compliance will attract legal action, the Mayor warned.
“All of them must have reflectors, the back and the sides,” Allotey stated. “If there are highways and there is a side road, you must always use the side road. If anybody or any operator decides to go contrary to whatever we are saying, we will make sure the law takes place.”
The move forms part of ongoing efforts by the AMA to enhance road safety involving informal commercial transport in Accra.
