Three Petitions Lodged With OSP Over Afenyo-Markin Extortion Claims

Three Petitions Lodged With OSP Over Afenyo-Markin Extortion Claims
Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has received three petitions concerning allegations of extortion against Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, the OSP confirmed it had received a joint petition from two individuals as well as two separate petitions from others. The anti-corruption body said it would assess the matter to determine whether the claims fall within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative steps are required.

The allegations were publicly levelled by Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). They arose amid a dispute over reported losses of approximately GH¢22 billion (about US$1.7 billion) linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025. Gyamfi accused Afenyo-Markin of extortion, with some reports referencing an alleged demand for US$1 million.

Afenyo-Markin has rejected the claims as false and defamatory, stating his intention to pursue legal action against Gyamfi.

Officials of the United Party, including Communications Director Solomon Owusu and Legal Director Andrew Appiah-Danquah, have also petitioned several state agencies, including the OSP, Attorney-General, police and CHRAJ, calling for a full probe into the matter.

The OSP’s assessment is currently ongoing.
