Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command over an alleged threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The 46-year-old was arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to have issued the threat against the NSA Director-General.

In a press release issued by the Accra Regional Police Command, the Police confirmed that Ayitey Powers is currently in custody and assisting with investigations into the matter.

The Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine the appropriate action in accordance with the law.

The Command has also urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information concerning the case while investigations continue.

The arrest comes days after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called on the Police to investigate and, where appropriate, prosecute Ayitey Powers over alleged threats directed at Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. The committee had described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and called for appropriate legal action.

The development adds to ongoing tensions within Ghana’s boxing community, with Ayitey Powers having previously expressed criticism of individuals involved in the administration of the sport.

For now, Ayitey Powers remains in Police custody as investigations continue. The Police have indicated that any further action will be guided by the outcome of the investigation and the applicable laws.
