“I Want to Connect More Deeply” — Ria Boss on Adding French to Her Music

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Ria Boss is expanding the linguistic and cultural reach of her music, revealing that she has recently begun incorporating more French into her songs as part of an intentional effort to connect with her growing Francophone audience.

Speaking on the Franco Vybz Podcast with host Erskine Whyte, Ria Boss explained that while she previously sang predominantly in English, her approach to songwriting has evolved to include more French.

“I used to sing mostly in English. However, I’ve in recent times started incorporating more French into my music as a way to connect more deeply with my Francophone audience,” she said.

The move reflects the growing cross-border appeal of African music, particularly as artistes increasingly look beyond English-speaking markets to connect with audiences across the continent.

Ria Boss is widely celebrated for her smoky, soulful voice and her distinctive fusion of neo-soul, jazz and R&B. Her music has earned her recognition for its intimate songwriting, understated delivery and genre-blending sound.
