Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician and former Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) president Diana Hopeson has revealed that several Ghanaian music catalogues have recently been acquired by foreign buyers who came into the country specifically to purchase music rights.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, Diana Hopeson discussed the changing business landscape of the Ghanaian music industry, particularly the growing importance of music publishing and catalogues.

According to the veteran musician, “some people recently came into town and bought several Ghanaian music catalogues,” highlighting what appears to be a growing interest in Ghanaian music intellectual property from investors outside the country.

A music catalogue can generate income through several channels, including streaming, radio and television usage, licensing, publishing royalties, performances and the use of songs in films, advertisements and other commercial productions. As the songs continue to find new audiences through digital streaming platforms, their commercial value can extend well beyond their original release period.

Diana Hopeson is also closely connected to the business side of music. She is the founder and CEO of GHMusic Publishing and Management, a Ghanaian music publishing company established to help songwriters, composers and performers maximise the value of their intellectual property and reach international audiences.

Her revelation has since sparked conversations among music fans and industry watchers on the internet, with many expressing curiosity about the catalogues that have been sold, who acquired them and how much the rights were worth.




The discussion has also raised broader questions about the ownership and commercial value of Ghanaian music, particularly as more investors recognise the potential of African music catalogues as long-term intellectual property assets.

For fans, the revelation has opened up a conversation that goes beyond individual songs, touching on the future of Ghana’s musical heritage, the value of music rights and whether artistes and rights holders are receiving fair value when they sell their catalogues.
