The Kingdom of Cambodia has ordered African nationals currently benefiting from immigration waivers to leave the country by May 31, 2026, warning that anyone who remains beyond the deadline could face arrest, imprisonment and heavy fines.

The directive, issued by Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior, affects nationals from several African countries, including Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon and Uganda.

Authorities said the temporary immigration waiver granted to the affected foreign nationals will officially expire at the end of May.

According to the notice, all foreign nationals whose immigration fines or related issues have been resolved are expected to leave Cambodia on or before May 31.

The immigration department warned that any affected person found in Cambodia from June 1, 2026, would be arrested either at the airport or any other location across the country.

Offenders could face up to two years in prison and an $8,000 fine before being deported.

The move has sparked concern among Africans living in Cambodia, particularly those who entered the Southeast Asian nation under temporary immigration concessions or waiver arrangements.

The development also adds to growing concerns about the treatment of African migrants abroad. Reports of xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa have prompted the evacuation of some Ghanaian nationals on Wednesday, May 27.

Cambodia has, in recent years, sought to boost international tourism and foreign investment through relaxed visa and travel policies for some nationalities. Earlier this year, the country announced a temporary visa-free programme for Chinese nationals as part of efforts to revive tourism.

However, the latest directive signals a tougher stance toward foreigners currently staying under expired or temporary immigration arrangements.
