The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced that the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products, commonly known as styrofoam or takeaway packs, will be banned nationwide from January 1, 2027.
The directive follows a government policy announcement made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration, where he outlined plans to phase out styrofoam products as part of efforts to tackle plastic pollution and protect the environment.
According to the EPA, the ban will cover all forms of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products used for commercial and domestic purposes. These include takeaway food containers, disposable cups and plates, foam packaging used by restaurants and food vendors, ceiling and insulation materials, foam mattresses, and various types of packaging materials.
The authority, however, stated that the restriction will not apply to EPS products intended for medical, scientific, laboratory, and diagnostic purposes, subject to regulatory approval.
The EPA said the move forms part of broader national efforts to improve environmental sanitation, reduce plastic waste, protect public health, and promote sustainable development.
As part of preparations toward implementation, the authority has directed manufacturers, importers, distributors, and users of polystyrene foam products to begin transitioning to reusable, recyclable, and environmentally sustainable alternatives.
The EPA also indicated that between now and January 2027, it will carry out stakeholder engagements, public education campaigns, technical consultations, and compliance monitoring exercises to ensure smooth enforcement of the directive.
The authority added that it will work with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, port authorities, customs officials, and other industry regulators to enforce the ban nationwide once it takes effect.
The public has also been encouraged to support the initiative by adopting environmentally friendly packaging alternatives and sustainable consumption practices.
