UK-based Ghanaian rapper Suspect OTB has said Ghanaian music has evolved into a powerful global movement capable of influencing sounds beyond the country’s borders.
The rapper, who was speaking on Culture Daily on 3Music TV, reflected on how Ghanaian music has transitioned from the Azonto era to drill and Afrobeats, earning attention in places like the UK and the United States.
According to him, songs emerging from Ghana carry a distinct identity that resonates internationally because artists are not simply copying trends but adapting them into something original.
He described the success of drill music from Kumasi as “shock and awe” in the UK because of how naturally Ghanaian artists adapted a sound that originally emerged in the West.
“Taking the culture, and all these inspirations came from the West, right? Because nobody in Kumasi originated drill. So they saw drill from the West, and then they put it through the Kumasi filter and gave it back to the West,” he explained.
Suspect OTB also praised Ghanaian musicians for building strong artistic identities regardless of where they come from.
“Over the years of coming to Ghana, I always realised how a particular artist could be from some small village somewhere up north or something, but he could create such a big persona for himself,” he said.
He added that Ghanaian creatives continue to inspire him because of their resilience and work ethic.
The rapper further described himself as “an anomaly” musically, insisting his sound is constantly evolving rather than following industry trends.
“There ain’t a soul in the world that is making the music I’m making,” he stated.
Suspect OTB also highlighted how Ghanaian songs have gained international recognition over the years, mentioning tracks like Condemn and the influence of artists such as Black Sherif.
The musician is currently preparing to release his debut album, Push, on June 26. The project will feature Ghanaian artists, including Jackie and AratheJay.
He also revealed plans to stage a live show in Ghana later this year as part of efforts to deepen his connection with fans in the country.
“I want maybe by Christmas I’ve got my own live show here, so I can showcase my talents properly and bring you into my world as well,” he said.
