Italian-based Nigerian singer, songwriter and dancer Modola says her former school in Italy created a student entertainment platform after her performances began attracting attention from both students and teachers from different classes.
Speaking on Culture Daily on 3Music TV on Thursday, May 21, the singer said her love for performing began in childhood when she would dance and sing in front of television screens and classmates.
According to her, she regularly entertained students during school breaks by singing and dancing in class.
“In school, they had to open a section for me, the radio of the school,” she said.
"People started requesting those things. During breaks from other classes, they come to my class just because they want to be entertained," she added.
Modola also noted that she pushed school authorities to organise entertainment activities similar to those she had seen in American schools.
According to her, she circulated petitions among students and encouraged discussions about introducing end-of-year entertainment programmes.
“I started passing through class. Everyone was signing,” she recounted.
She said one incident convinced school authorities to formally support the initiative after a large number of students and teachers gathered in a hall following a message she circulated without permission.
“When they realised they had to do it, from the next year, they said, You’re going to be under the Monkey Radio. Let’s work together this time,” she said.
Modola described herself throughout the interview as stubborn and determined, saying she has always challenged situations where people told her something was impossible.
Modola also expressed interest in future collaborations with Ghanaian musicians, including Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.
