Contractor Hands Over Weija Children’s Hospital To Government

A contractor has formally handed over the Weija Children’s Hospital to the government on Friday, marking a key step toward improving specialised paediatric care in the Weija-Gbawe area and surrounding communities.

The 120-bed facility is designed to deliver advanced specialist paediatric services and is expected to ease pressure on existing institutions, particularly St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which has faced capacity constraints and ageing infrastructure.

Construction of the hospital was reportedly completed more than a year ago. However, the facility remained closed, prompting residents and parents to stage a demonstration in May 2026 demanding its operationalisation.

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, expressed frustration over the delays.

“I don’t think we should still be playing politics with this facility. It should be operationalised for people to use it,” he said.

Shaib added that he had received word from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh that the hospital had been operationalised, but found it still closed when he visited.

Officials from the Ministry of Health were present at the handover. It remains unclear when the hospital will begin operations or whether a management team has been fully constituted.

The project has drawn scrutiny, including reports that the contractor was questioned by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following interactions with health authorities.

Local residents and health advocates have welcomed the handover as progress toward better access to specialised care for children in the area, while calling for swift action to open the facility to patients.
