Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu Reiterates Calls For Stronger Safety Measures After Helicopter Crash

The personal assistant to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has reiterated calls for stronger aviation safety measures and better protection for government officials travelling on official assignments following last year’s Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash.

According to Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, the country must ensure that meaningful lessons are drawn from the deaths of the eight victims.

He made the calls in an interview with 3Music TV on the sidelines of  the National Inter-Faith Memorial Service in Accra to mark one year since the tragedy, when he reflected on  the lessons learned from the tragic incident.

He said Ghana should review the safety arrangements for officials travelling on official duties, improve technology used to assess risks within the country’s airspace and provide adequate insurance cover for those undertaking such assignments.

“How do we guarantee the safety of government officials who travel in official capacities? These are things we need to consider as a nation, he noted.

The Islamic clergyman also stressed the importance of preserving the memory of those who died by building a stronger culture of national service and sacrifice.

He said the victims had given their lives while serving the country and urged Ghanaians to honour them by placing the national interest above personal gain.

“They dedicated themselves and sacrificed, so we must also be able to sacrifice for others to come and enjoy,” he said.

He added that beyond improving safety, the tragedy should inspire citizens to confront the country’s challenges with discipline and a shared commitment to national development.
