Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has announced that the Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL) will develop animated cartoons to promote indigenous languages and cultural values, particularly among children.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, Gomashie said the initiative aims to make Ghanaian languages more accessible and engaging for younger generations who increasingly consume digital and visual content.

“The BGL is undertaking the animation of our Ghanaian languages. The rationale behind this is to introduce our culture to Ghanaian children through cartoons,” she stated.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the ministry to preserve Ghana’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Officials say it is intended to encourage Ghanaians to speak their mother tongues and pass them on to their children.

Gomashie also noted that the ministry is supporting related activities, including the organisation of the Ghana Languages Festival, to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding indigenous languages.

The announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about the declining everyday use of many local languages among urban youth and the strong influence of foreign media content.

The BGL’s cartoon initiative seeks to counter this trend by presenting cultural stories and language instruction in a format familiar to children.
