Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama has said that Ghana’s gold and cocoa exports performed strongly in the first half of 2026, helping the country record a wider trade surplus.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani, Asiama noted that the robust performance of the two key commodities contributed significantly to the external sector’s resilience, even as foreign exchange reserves declined modestly over the six-month period.

According to Bank of Ghana data, total export earnings reached a record about US$18.2 billion by the end of June 2026, up from US$13.7 billion in the same period of 2025.

Gold remained the dominant earner, generating US$12.5 billion, a sharp rise from US$8.3 billion a year earlier. Cocoa exports also improved slightly to around US$2.2 billion from US$2.1 billion.

The strong export outturn supported a trade surplus of approximately US$8.8 billion in the first half of the year, compared with US$5.7 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.

Asiama linked the gains to higher global prices for gold and improved cocoa receipts, while highlighting broader economic progress, including GDP growth of 6.4 percent in the first quarter of 2026 and strong expansion in private sector credit.

The Governor stressed that the reserves position, which stood at US$12.9 billion at the end of June (equivalent to about five months of import cover), remains adequate to buffer the economy against external shocks.
