Ghanaian musician AratheJay and UK-based rapper Suspect OTB have shared details about how their collaboration Ashes came together, describing the process as natural and spiritually driven.
The two artists spoke about the record during an appearance on Culture Daily on 3Music TV, where they revealed that the collaboration happened unexpectedly at a studio session in Ghana.
According to AratheJay, the song was recorded after he met Suspect OTB at Small World Records.
He explained that he had already been familiar with Suspect OTB’s music before meeting him physically for the first time.
“I’ve been listening to Sus, seeing him in person, I’ve been texting him on the socials. So seeing him in person for the first time, I’m like, ‘Yo,’” he recalled.
Suspect OTB said the collaboration was not pre-planned but came together naturally during the session.
“He actually met me recording,” he explained.
The rapper added that the chemistry between them was immediate because both artists approached music from a similar creative perspective.
“We haven’t got no book of rhymes where we’re going to the studio. We’re hearing the beat, feeling the energy, vibing it,” he said.
The song, produced by Lucky Jones, was reportedly completed in February this year.
Suspect OTB admitted the track pushed him creatively because of its spiritual direction.
“I haven’t made a song like this where I’m even talking about God. Ara challenged me,” he stated.
AratheJay also disclosed that the title Ashes carries personal meaning linked to a difficult period in his life.
“I had gotten to a point where I was utterly frustrated. It’s for some things, for a reason. It’s very intentional,” he revealed.
