Elsa Majimbo Claims Colorism Comments Cost Her Kenyan Support At E! People’s Choice Awards
Elsa Majimbo
Kenyan comedian and global internet sensation Elsa Majimbo has opened up about what she believes was a wave of backlash from some Kenyans during her nomination for the E! People’s Choice Awards, one she says stemmed from her public stance against colorism.

Speaking in an interview with ONE54, Elsa Majimbo claimed that after she addressed colorism and its impact within African societies, sections of the Kenyan public reacted negatively, allegedly voting against her in the global awards process.

According to Elsa Majimbo, the response felt less like healthy disagreement and more like punishment for what many perceived as “airing family secrets.” She suggested that conversations around colorism, particularly when raised on international platforms, are often met with discomfort, denial, or outright hostility, even when they reflect lived realities.

“It felt like people were upset that I said it out loud,” she implied during the interview, noting that the backlash revealed how sensitive and unresolved the issue remains within local communities.

Colorism, a long-standing issue across many African and Black communities, refers to prejudice or discrimination based on skin tone, often favoring lighter skin over darker complexions.

Despite the setback, the comedian maintains that speaking out was necessary. Known for her bold humor and unfiltered commentary, Elsa Majimbo has built a global following by challenging norms and refusing to dilute her voice for comfort.

Her revelation has since sparked renewed debate online, with supporters praising her courage while critics argue that internal issues should be handled privately. Either way, the moment underscores a broader cultural reckoning, one that shows how difficult, yet essential, honest conversations can be.

As Elsa Majimbo continues to navigate global fame, her experience serves as a reminder that success on the world stage often comes with the burden of confronting deeply rooted social truths back home.
