Academy Awards To Stream On YouTube From 2029

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is preparing for one of the biggest shifts in Oscar history. Beginning in 2029, the Academy Awards will officially move to YouTube, marking a bold transition from traditional television to global digital streaming.

The move will kick off with the 101st Academy Awards and will see the ceremony exclusively streamed on YouTube through 2031. According to the Academy, the decision reflects a growing need to connect with a worldwide audience beyond the limitations of primetime television.

The Academy says the change is driven by global accessibility rather than ratings alone. With audiences increasingly consuming content online and on mobile devices, YouTube offers a platform that allows viewers across different time zones and regions to tune in without barriers.

This move positions the Oscars to reach younger audiences, international film lovers and digital-first viewers who may not traditionally sit through a long broadcast on linear TV.

Before the digital era begins, the Oscars will maintain their traditional broadcast setup. The 2026 Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 15, continuing the long-standing partnership between the network and the Academy.

Fan-favorite comedian and television host Conan O’Brien is also set to return as host for the 2026 ceremony, promising his signature blend of humor and sharp commentary.

A New Era for Film’s Biggest Night
The Oscars’ move to YouTube signals a broader transformation in how major global events are consumed. While tradition remains important, the Academy’s embrace of digital platforms highlights an effort to stay relevant, inclusive and globally connected in an evolving media landscape.
