Ghanaian rising artiste Maphya is carving a distinct path in the music industry, drawing deeply on his roots in the Northern Region to shape a sound that is both authentic and globally appealing. Hailing from Lungni, Maphya’s story is one of resilience, cultural pride and artistic determination.
In a conversation with the Culture Squad, he recalls being drawn to any environment where music was playing, moving instinctively to rhythms whether cultural or contemporary. Over time, this passion evolved into songwriting and eventually into a professional music career, which he officially began in 2019.
Musically, Maphya blends Reggae and Dancehall, a fusion inspired by both his upbringing and exposure. As he grew older, he drew additional influence from Ghanaian acts like Stonebwoy, Samini, Jupita and Episode, naturally gravitating toward a sound that merges reggae roots with contemporary African energy.
His debut album, SOUNDZ OF LUNGNI, is a deeply personal and culturally grounded body of work that reflects both his journey and the realities of his community. The project captures themes of survival, gratitude, love, struggle and social commentary. The opening track, THANKS & PRAISE, was inspired by a near-fatal accident he and his team survived.
One of the standout tracks, JUNGLE, addresses pressing issues in Lungni, particularly the lack of a hospital despite its status as a major trading hub with a bustling market held every six days.
Other songs on the album explore a range of emotions and experiences. Other tracks on the album are EVER BLAZING, UP & STRONG, AGONY and BOLGA TO KPASSA.
Beyond the music, Maphya’s artistry is rooted in authenticity. From his fashion to his visuals, he consistently represents his culture, a quality that resonates strongly with audiences.
Looking ahead, Maphya is set to bring his music to life with the SOUNDZ OF LUNGNI EXPERIENCE, scheduled to take place at the Accra Arts Centre on April 3rd. The event promises to be more than just a performance, it is positioned as a cultural showcase, offering audiences a chance to experience the essence of Lungni through music, storytelling and tradition.
