Buzstopboys Raises Public Health Concerns Over Fish Processing In Tema

Sanitation volunteer and advocacy group BuzStopBoys is calling on the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to investigate what it describes as unsafe fish handling practices at a fish processing site in Tema New Town in the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

The appeal follows the release of a video by the group showing fish being dried directly on the ground, exposed to sand, refuse and other contaminants, while people walk through the processing area.

According to the group, the conditions raise concerns about food safety and the potential health risks to consumers.

The footage, which was shared across BuzStopBoys’ social media platforms, has attracted widespread public attention, with many Ghanaians questioning the hygiene standards under which some fish is processed before reaching the market.

The video also shows fish left uncovered along the seashore, where it is exposed to garbage and sites known for open defecation. BuzStopBoys argues that the situation highlights the need for stricter enforcement of food safety regulations and improved sanitation practices at fish processing centres.

Speaking to 3Music TV, BuzStopBoys founder and leader Heneba Kwadwo Safo said the group’s objective is to draw the attention of the Food and Drugs Authority to practices that could pose a risk to public health.

He stressed that the campaign is intended to create the awareness on the sustainable environmental practices in order for people to do right things.

Heneba Kwadwo Safo also noted that there is only so much that the group can, stressing the need for authorities to act.

According to him, the group had not been contacted by any authorities since the release of the video.
