Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has opened up about the difficulties aspiring musicians face when trying to build careers in Ghana, revealing that mockery from peers can be one of the biggest sources of discouragement.

Speaking on the all-new Group Chat podcast, hosted by media personality Nana Aba Anamoah alongside other Ghanaian musicians, Lyrical Joe reflected on the challenges that come with taking the first steps in music, particularly when those around you do not take your ambitions seriously.

According to the rapper, the fear of being mocked by friends and peers can make it difficult for young people to confidently pursue music, especially at the early stages when they are yet to establish themselves.

He noted that beyond the financial and structural challenges within Ghana’s music industry, aspiring artistes also have to contend with the opinions and reactions of people within their immediate circles.

Lyrical Joe’s comments highlight the often-overlooked social pressure faced by young creatives who choose unconventional career paths. For many aspiring musicians, the journey begins long before recognition, hit songs or major stages—and having the confidence to keep going despite ridicule can be a major part of the process.

His candid reflections came during a conversation on Group Chat, where Nana Aba Anamoah brought together Ghanaian musicians to discuss their experiences, perspectives and the realities of navigating the country’s creative industry.
