TUC Rejects Proposal To Allow Dual Citizens As MPs

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has rejected a proposal to amend Ghana’s 1992 Constitution that would allow dual citizens to contest parliamentary elections and serve as Members of Parliament.

The recommendation, put forward by the Constitutional Review Committee and accepted by the government, seeks to change Article 94(2). Under the current provision, Ghanaians who hold citizenship of another country are barred from becoming MPs while retaining their foreign citizenship.

TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah described the proposal as “self-serving and a direct assault on genuine citizenship.” He said it is contradictory and serves no useful purpose for the country.

“Anyone seeking to serve in Parliament must demonstrate an undivided commitment to the country’s interests, sovereignty, and national priorities,” Ansah stated. 

The TUC is urging that the existing restrictions be maintained to protect national interest and ensure full commitment to public service.
