Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly “surprised” after a letter issued on behalf of King Charles clarified that the couple remain non-working members of the Royal Family.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said the couple were surprised that they had not been informed in advance about the letter, which was sent on Monday afternoon.

According to the spokesperson, Harry and Meghan “were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”

However, royal sources have disputed the suggestion that the Sussexes were completely unaware of the communication, saying they had been made aware of the letter before it was released publicly.

It is understood that Harry and Meghan only saw the letter around an hour before it was shared with the media, leaving little time for the couple or their representatives to respond.

The development comes as the Sussexes have recently returned to live in the UK, bringing renewed attention to their relationship with the Royal Family and the question of their official status.

Despite their return, the letter makes clear that Harry and Meghan continue to be considered non-working royals and are not undertaking official duties on behalf of the monarchy.

Meanwhile, questions surrounding the couple’s security in the UK are also expected to come into focus.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, commonly known as Ravec, is reportedly meeting this week to consider the level of taxpayer-funded security that should be provided to the Sussexes now that they are resident in the country.

Ravec is responsible for determining security arrangements for members of the Royal Family and other high-profile individuals. Prince Harry has previously raised concerns over the level of police protection available to him and his family when visiting the UK.

The Home Office has declined to comment on the committee’s deliberations or any potential outcome.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The UK government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate. It is our longstanding policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security.”

The disagreement over the timing of the King’s letter adds another layer to the complicated relationship between the Sussexes and the wider Royal Family.

While the couple’s spokesperson maintains that they were given little advance notice, royal sources insist they had been informed before the letter became public.

The issue of Harry and Meghan’s royal status, security and relationship with the monarchy is likely to remain under close scrutiny as they establish their new life in the UK.
