Black Princesses Suffer 3-0 Defeat To Ecuador In U-20 Women’s World Cup Opener

Ghana’s Black Princesses endured a difficult start to their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign after suffering a 3-0 loss to Ecuador at Arena Sosnowiec in Poland on Sunday.

Ecuador took control early in the Group C encounter. Rosa Flores opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a spectacular long-range strike after spotting Ghana goalkeeper Najat Salam off her line. Flores then set up Domenica Arboleda, who finished to make it 2-0 in the 17th minute.

Ghana were forced into a goalkeeping change when the injured Najat Salam was replaced by Precious Asante. Despite efforts to respond, including a chance for Agnes Yeboah that struck the post, the Black Princesses struggled to break down the South American side. Arboleda sealed the victory with her second goal in the 69th minute.

Head coach Charles Sampson described the result as unexpected, pointing to early defensive errors that put his team on the back foot.

“This was a little bit unexpected. The way we started the game, the way we conceded those two goals, they were a bit cheap,” he said after the match.

The defeat leaves Ghana with an uphill task in Group C, which also includes South Korea and France. South Korea and France drew 1-1 in the other group opener. 

The Black Princesses will next face South Korea on Wednesday, September 9, as they look to revive their campaign and keep alive hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
