Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has assured the family of the late Professor Jason Atta Kwei Arday that Ghana will be represented at his funeral.
Ablakwa said he spoke by telephone with the professor’s mother, Mrs Gifty Arday, on Friday to convey the government’s condolences. He informed her that President John Mahama has personally signed a letter of condolence, which is being delivered by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
“As I assured Mrs. Arday in our solemn telephone conversation, Ghana will be present at his funeral to pay our respects,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
He described Arday’s death as a collective and painful loss and expressed the hope that the late academic’s legacy would help create a fairer and more just world.
Professor Arday, who was born in Britain to Ghanaian parents, made history in 2023 when he was appointed the University of Cambridge’s youngest Black professor. He served as Professor of Sociology of Education before resigning in early August 2026 amid allegations of plagiarism and questions about aspects of his academic record.
He was found dead at his home in Battersea, south London, on 14 August 2026 at the age of 41. An inquest into his death has been opened.
No date has yet been announced for the funeral.
