GH¢2 Diesel Subsidy Not Enough To Stop Fare Hike - GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has stated that the government’s absorption of GH¢2 per litre of diesel is insufficient to prevent an upward review of public transport fares.

According to the union, current fuel prices combined with rising costs of spare parts, lubricants, insurance and taxes remain above the threshold needed to maintain existing fares. Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah said operators continue to face financial pressure that makes vehicle maintenance difficult and risks drivers running at a loss.

The GPRTU had earlier proposed a 30% fare increase in August but suspended the move following a government appeal. After monitoring the market, the union said it observed no significant reduction in fuel prices while other operational expenses continued to climb.

The union, working with the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), has begun the formal fare review process and submitted a request to the Ministry of Transport.

The development raises the prospect of higher transport fares for passengers in the coming weeks if the government and transport operators fail to reach a new agreement.
