American music star Lionel Richie has remained in hospital in St Louis, Missouri, after seeking medical attention following a concert on 29 August.

The 77-year-old singer checked himself into a local hospital after performing at The Muny in Forest Park. A source close to his tour told Rolling Stone that he was doing well and had gone to hospital as a precaution.

Reports now say Richie is in intensive care while doctors conduct tests related to possible cardiac issues. People reported that he was expected to return home on Wednesday, 2 September, although no specific diagnosis has been publicly confirmed by the singer or his representatives.

Concern about Richie’s health arose during his St Louis performance. He appeared to struggle towards the end of the show and asked for a chair while performing his final song, All Night Long. He completed the performance while seated.

The hospitalisation comes after another health scare earlier this year.

On 24 June, Richie became dizzy during a concert in St Paul, Minnesota, and ended the performance early. Two subsequent shows in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, were postponed on medical advice.

He later returned to the stage and reassured fans that he was recovering. Reports at the time linked the episode to dehydration.

Richie is currently touring with Earth, Wind & Fire on the Sing a Song All Night Long tour. His next listed performance is in San Francisco on 26 September, followed by dates in Chicago and Columbus in early October.

The singer, who first gained international recognition as a member of the Commodores before launching a successful solo career, has spent more than five decades in music. His best-known songs include Hello, All Night Long, Say You, Say Me and Three Times a Lady.

Richie has won multiple Grammy Awards and remains a prominent figure in popular culture, including through his role as a judge on American Idol.

For now, details of his condition remain limited. Reports have described the hospital visit as precautionary, but there has been no public confirmation of a specific heart condition.
