Bruno Fernandes Named Premier League Player Of The Matchweek After Hat-Trick Masterclass

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been voted the Premier League’s Player of the Matchweek for Matchweek 2 following his outstanding performance in Sunday’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese midfielder scored a hat-trick and provided an assist as Michael Carrick’s side came from behind to secure their first win of the 2026-27 season. Fernandes opened the scoring with a powerful near-post strike in the 40th minute to cancel out Leif Davis’s earlier goal for the visitors. 

After Jacob Greaves’ own goal put United ahead, Fernandes converted a penalty and then completed his treble by reacting quickest to a deflected shot. He later set up Bryan Mbeumo for United’s fifth goal.

Fernandes claimed a dominant 69% of the fan vote, finishing ahead of nominees including Rayan Cherki, Morgan Gibbs-White, Nico Gonzalez, Erling Haaland, João Pedro and Konstantinos Tzolakis. The award marks another individual honour for the United skipper, who won Player of the Matchweek a league-high six times last season.

The official Premier League account announced the result on Wednesday, describing Fernandes as a “hat-trick hero” for his match-winning display and linking to video highlights of his performance.

United’s win lifted them level on points with Ipswich after both sides had mixed starts to the campaign. Fernandes’ contribution underlined his continued importance as captain and creative force for the Red Devils.
