The Effutu Municipal Assembly and Gomoa Central District Assembly have pledged to settle the hospital bills of 17 people injured in a violent clash that erupted in New Winneba on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The incident, linked to a longstanding land ownership dispute, occurred around 10:40 a.m. when approximately 300 people armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze entered the township.

The group attacked residents, vandalised shops, stores and homes, and left three people dead and 17 others wounded, including a police officer. Many of the injuries involved gunshots.

Officials from both assemblies, including Effutu Municipal Chief Executive Atta Mensah and Gomoa Central District Chief Executive Hackman Kwabena Adu, visited the affected communities and hospitals on Wednesday, September 2.

“We came here and realised that most of them suffered gun injuries, and so we have promised to collaborate with the two assemblies and make sure we take care of their hospital bills,” Mr. Atta Mensah said.

Hackman Kwabena Adu called on politicians and community leaders to refrain from making inflammatory statements that could escalate tensions.

Police arrested six suspects in connection with the violence: Kweku Kakraba (52), Arko Thomas (19), Samuel Tulasi (19), Samuel Gyasi (22), Emmanuel Okyere (22) and Seth Osei (22).

Security has been reinforced with additional personnel, armoured vehicles, snap checkpoints and intensified patrols. Authorities say the situation is now under control.
