Old Hits, New Fire: Togbe Afrika Makes Triumphant Return After 20-year Music Break

Veteran Ghanaian musician Togbe Afrika has announced his return to active music in grand style, more than 20 years after stepping away from the stage.

His comeback reached its defining moment at the Togbe Afrika Homecoming concert held at Infinity Stars Hotel, where Togbe Ekle II, Chief of Penyi Hata, enstooled and honoured him as King of African Music before his headline performance.

The traditional honour gave the comeback a meaning deeper than the usual lights, microphones and applause. Togbe Afrika had returned to perform, but he was also being received by the community as one of its own.

It was a fitting opening for an artiste whose stage name carries the chiefly title “Togbe” and whose music has long drawn strength from his Ewe identity. Once the ceremony ended, the newly honoured musician had to prove that the songs had survived his long absence.

The answer came quickly from the audience. Togbe Afrika opened part of his set with material from Menyabe, his early gospel project. As familiar melodies filled the venue, patrons sang and danced along to songs recorded decades earlier.

The reception grew stronger when he moved into the highlife and hiplife catalogue for which many older fans remember him. With DJ Dynamics driving the session, songs such as “Danye Sidzima” returned to life before an audience that crossed generations.

For those who knew the music during its original run, the performance carried the warmth of recognition and nostalgia. Younger party-goers encountered an artiste refusing to live solely on memory.

That point became clearer when Togbe Afrika returned to the stage with newer Afropop records, including “Fire on the Floor”, “What’s My Name”, “Happy Wedding Day” and “Move Your Body”. The shift from gospel and hiplife to a contemporary sound showed the purpose of the comeback: honour the catalogue, but do not become trapped inside it.

Veteran performer Togbui Anyigbanya brought another wave of nostalgia to the night, drawing enthusiastic responses to songs familiar to long-time followers of the region’s music.

Jah Phinga followed with an energetic set that placed a younger performer inside the larger homecoming story. His appearance helped turn the concert into a meeting between Volta music’s past and its present.

Enam also took her turn on stage, with fans singing along and some joining her during the performance. She revealed that the concert date, 29 August, was also Togbe Afrika’s birthday, adding a personal celebration to a night already built around his return.

Still, the strongest statement may have come from the placement of emerging artistes on the programme. By allowing younger acts to perform before the headline names, Togbe Afrika used his comeback to share visibility rather than reserve the occasion entirely for himself.

That choice points to the broader role he appears to be seeking in his second spell in music. He is returning as a performer, but also as an older figure who can connect established acts, rising talent and audiences across the Volta Region.

The concert was reported to have ended peacefully, with security support from the Volta Regional Police Command and the Dzodze Police Unit. Togbe Afrika also acknowledged the Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu for his support.

One successful night cannot by itself restore a career after more than two decades. Togbe Afrika will still need new releases, regular performances and a clear artistic identity for listeners who did not experience his first era.

Penyi Hata nevertheless gave him a persuasive starting point. The old songs still carried memories, the newer material reached for another generation, and Togbe Ekle II’s traditional honour tied the performance to home.

The comeback now moves beyond Penyi. Togbe Afrika’s next programme is scheduled for 26 September 2026 at Nitrogen Beach Resort in Adutor, near Dabala in the South Tongu District, where another audience will decide whether the King of African Music’s second chapter can gather momentum.
