Tanzanian President’s Husband Dies Of Heart Condition

The husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan has died. 

He passed away on Monday morning at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar while receiving treatment for a heart condition.

Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death and conveyed official condolences to the president, the family and friends. 

Hassan, an agricultural academic who largely stayed out of the public eye, became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when his wife assumed the presidency in 2021. The couple married in 1978 and had four children.

Kenyan President William Ruto was among those who offered tributes, describing Hassan as a lifelong companion to the president and a distinguished son of Tanzania.
