Gospel music group Daughters of Glorious Jesus has attributed their nearly four decades together to unity, trust and strong spiritual mentorship, saying they hope their journey will inspire others to work together.
Speaking on The Big Convo on the Culture Daily Morning Show on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9 FM, the trio said their foundation was built on values instilled by their spiritual father, Archbishop Akwasi Agyemang Asare Bediako, who named the group and helped shape their ministry.
“We want to leave a good legacy. We want to set a pace for people to know that where there is unity, there is victory. It can be done,” Cynthia Appiadu said.
She said the group’s message extends beyond music and applies to families, marriages, churches, and workplaces.
“If you love your sister or your brother, you won’t do him or her harm. Let’s come together, love each other, and move together because we can do more,” she said.
The group traced its beginnings to Sunday school and youth fellowship in Kumasi before officially forming in 1989. Cynthia and her sister Edna Sarpong began singing as children before meeting Monica Owusu Ansah at Resurrection Power and Living Bread Ministries.
They said Archbishop Asare Bediako recognised their potential, sought permission from their parents to mentor them and eventually gave them the name Daughters of Glorious Jesus. Their debut album was released in 1990.
The trio also revealed that they continue to rely on the guidance of their spiritual father after nearly 40 years in ministry, crediting him with teaching them everything from songwriting and stagecraft to personal conduct.
“We are still moving with him. He taught us how to dress and how to conduct ourselves on stage. He was very vigilant and very wise,” Edna said.
Despite surviving road accidents and other challenges over the years, the group said they had never considered ending their ministry.
“We are focused and determined to reach where God wants us to be. A lot of things happened that could have stopped us from singing, but we did not look at those things,” Cynthia said.
The trio added that they continue to mentor younger gospel musicians through an initiative known as Double D (Daughters’ Daughters), which has supported emerging artistes including Sandra Boakye Duah and others.
They said the programme forms part of their effort to ensure the next generation of gospel musicians continues to grow.
