Discipline Has Kept Me In Check Throughout My Career - KiDi

Ghanaian musician KiDi has identified discipline, discernment, and the support of his team and family as some of the factors that have helped him navigate the pressures of the music industry.

He revealed this on the Big Convo segment of the Culture Daily morning show on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9FM.

Reflecting on his career, KiDi said one of his biggest challenges had been learning how to listen to advice without allowing other people’s opinions to determine the direction of his life and career.

He described finding that balance as a “very thin line," saying artists needed discernment to know which advice to accept and which path to follow.

KiDi also pointed to distractions, including relationships and social pressures, as factors artists have to manage.

“Discipline trumps everything,” he said.

According to him, discipline has helped him remain focused in different areas of his life, including music and relationships.

He also stressed the importance of having people around an artist who are willing to correct them when necessary.

KiDi said artists could sometimes fail to recognise that they were moving in the wrong direction, making it important to have a team and family members who could “nudge” them back on course.

The musician also reflected on his early years in the industry, when he was told that his songs were not suitable for an Artiste of the Year award.

He said the comment affected him as a young musician who was still developing confidence in the industry.

“I went home… I remember my mind was just thinking,” he recalled.

However, KiDi said he eventually learned to focus on his journey rather than allowing such comments to distract him, which eventually led him to win his first Artiste of the Year award in 2021.

Looking back, KiDi said the experience reinforced his belief that results would eventually answer some of the doubts surrounding his career.

He also described himself as grounded despite his success, saying he had remained down to earth and did not allow achievements to make him feel superior to others.
