Ghanaians Are Becoming More Accepting Of Tattoos - Artist
Mounia Youssef

Tattoo artist Mounia Youssef has said that public attitudes towards tattoos in Ghana are gradually becoming more accepting, although many people still hesitate because of family and societal perceptions.

Speaking on Style on 3Music TV, Mounia said younger generations and social media have helped reduce some of the stigma traditionally associated with tattoos.

“People are more open about it, less judgemental,” she said, adding that many people who want tattoos still worry about how relatives, employers or society might react.

She said stereotypes linking tattoos with bad behaviour continue to discourage some people from getting body art, despite changing attitudes.

Mounia pointed to the experience of tattooing a 60-year-old woman for the first time as an example that perceptions can evolve regardless of age.

She also dismissed the common belief that people with tattoos cannot donate blood permanently.

According to her, tattooed individuals can donate blood after waiting for the required period following the procedure, although she advised people to seek medical guidance on the exact timeframe.

Mounia said tattoo artists also have a responsibility to advise clients against designs or placements that may not age well or could lead to regret in the future.

“It’s my duty to tell you the truth,” she said, explaining that artists should recommend alternatives when they believe a client’s original idea is unsuitable rather than simply carrying it out.
