Kaneshie Commuters Demand Swift Completion Of Footbridges 3 Months After Closure

Commuters around Kaneshie are calling on authorities to swiftly complete the works on the footbridges to aid pedestrian traffic.

The call comes three months after the two main footbridges at Kaneshie were closed for maintenance and repair works.

Following a visit by the Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, in April 2026, which revealed major damage, including exposed metal reinforcements as a result of cracked concrete, the closure was put in place to avoid any dangers associated with using the bridges.

Authorities provided a zebra crossing and an opening on the highway to help pedestrian traffic, alongside police officers to oversee movement.

A visit to Kaneshie by 3 Music TV on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, revealed a worsening crisis, as no visible work on the footbridges was seen.

Pedestrians continue using the main road, and although there's police supervision, they say their safety is not guaranteed.

One such pedestrian told 3 Music TV that he uses the stretch every day and it is stressful.

"I cross this road every day, and it is very stressful because sometimes the police are not here to help us cross, and the drivers do not stop when they see us, so we have to wait for a long time before we cross," the pedestrian said.

Another pedestrian who attempted to use the footbridge and returned shared that he was not aware of the directive and only returned because the bridge looked deserted and unsafe.

"I did not know that the footbridge has been closed down. I realized I was the only one on it, and that did not feel safe, so I decided to come back," he said.

The office of the Mayor has not issued any communication concerning the footbridges in a long while.

It remains unclear when the bridges will be reopened to the public.

Commuters are therefore pleading with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and authorities to quickly work on the footbridges to ensure their safe passage.
