A tattoo artist at Accra-based 1410 Studio has cautioned against relying entirely on artificial intelligence (AI) to create tattoo designs, saying technology should only be used as a starting point rather than a replacement for human creativity.
Speaking on Style on 3Music TV, tattoo artist Mounia Youssef said the studio has seen an increasing number of clients bringing AI-generated designs for tattoos. However, she said such designs often fail to consider the technical realities of tattooing on human skin.
“The worst ideas that we are seeing nowadays are clients asking AI to produce designs. AI can be a starting point, but it doesn’t know the rules, it doesn’t know the skin,” she said.
Mounia said professional tattoo artists should be allowed to develop and improve on clients’ ideas instead of simply copying AI-generated images.
She explained that artists use client references as inspiration before producing original artwork suited to the person’s body, tattoo placement and desired style.
According to her, even clients who have unusual or highly personal ideas that cannot be found online can work with tattoo artists to create custom designs from scratch.
Mounia said tattooing requires artistic judgement beyond drawing skills, noting that artists must understand balance, placement and how designs will appear on the body over time.
She added that clients who request custom designs are required to pay a deposit before an artist begins work on creating the final artwork.
