Ghanaian TikToker Camilla Alhassan, has been sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to publishing false news and engaging in offensive conduct over videos in which she made unsubstantiated claims about President John Dramani Mahama.
The 43-year-old TikToker was sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court on Thursday after admitting all charges brought against her by the Ghana Police Service.
She was arrested on 10 July and remanded in custody pending sentencing after appearing before the court the same day.
The charges stemmed from a series of TikTok videos posted between late June and early July, in which Camilla alleged that President Mahama had sacrificed 32 cows to secure political power.
According to reports, she also claimed that the government’s distribution of sanitary pads to victims of the 29 June floods was intended to conceal the alleged ritual acts.
Investigators said the claims were false and unsupported by any evidence.
Before her arrest, Camilla said in another video that she had been invited by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning but failed to honour the invitation immediately.
She was subsequently arrested and charged with publication of false news and offensive conduct under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act.
The case has attracted widespread public attention and renewed debate over the responsibilities of social media content creators and the legal consequences of spreading unverified allegations online.
Camilla’s conviction follows a series of arrests this year involving social media personalities accused of making false or threatening statements against public officials.
While the Media Foundation for West Africa has criticised the continued use of criminal laws to prosecute speech-related offences, it has also urged content creators to avoid spreading misinformation and other harmful content on digital platforms.
