Award-winning rapper Eno Barony has credited ace entertainer Mzbel for the recent successes of women in the space. According to the tough-talking rapper, MzBel’s efforts and sacrifices at the turn of the millennium were crucial to the new wave of success being enjoyed by women.
The controversial veteran was the most impactful lady act in Ghana at the turn of the millennium, being perennially nominated at the most prominent Awards events. Standing out for her timeless music and controversial wardrobe, the star was for the best part of the decade one of the hottest Ghanaian music properties, and most dominant female- if not the only.
Since that era, there has been even better representation for women. Stars like Diana Hamilton, the late Ebony Reigns and rookie crooner Gyakie have all chalked significant feats in music for women in just the last half-decade.
Barony knows a thing or two about being a successful woman in a male-dominated space having become the first female in Africa to win a Rapper of the Year award when she scooped the gong at the 4th annual 3Music Awards last year.
“Women are doing incredibly well now. We are on the right path, if you see what people like Wendy Shay, Gyakie, Adina, and others are doing. We really owe a lot to the pacesetters. Abrewanana did her part. But for me MzBel made the difference. She was very consistent in an era where there were barely any women on the scene, and held her own against the guys by churning out hits regularly. It was significant in paving the way for all of us today” Eno remarked.
Winning Rapper of the Year cemented Eno’s place in global music history. She joins renowned legends like Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah and Missy Eliott, as one of only seven female rappers in the world to have managed the feat or other equivalent at a respected music awards event.
