British-Nigerian rapper and singer Darkoo has set the music scene abuzz with a tantalizing preview of her upcoming single, slated for release this Thursday, May 15, 2025, as shared in a recent post. The 23-year-old artiste, known for her breakout 2019 hit GANGSTA with One Acen, which peaked at number 22 on the UK Official Singles Chart, dropped a snippet of the new track on May 13, captioning it, “Bringing it back like it’s summer 2002 Thursday 8pm.”

The teaser, featuring a nostalgic beat reminiscent of early 2000s R&B fused with her signature Afrobeat and drill influences, has fans speculating about a potential summer anthem. Darkoo’s history of blending genres, evident in her 2021 EP 2 IN 1 and collaborations with artistes like Tion Wayne and Ayra Starr, suggests this release could further fortify her place in the evolving Afrobeats scene.

The announcement comes on the heels of Darkoo’s recent headline show at KOKO in London on April 28, 2025, where she performed fan favorites like FAVOURITE GIRL with Rema and  FOCUS ON ME (All The Sexy Girls In The Club). Her ability to merge sultry vocals with hard-hitting rap, as noted in her Apple Music profile, has earned her a loyal following, with over 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Posts reflect the hype, with fans expressing anticipation for what they hope will be another chart-topping hit following her contribution to the 2021 number-one remix of BODY by Russ Millions and Tion Wayne.

Darkoo’s tease aligns with her ongoing mission to celebrate African identity, a theme central to her music since her debut at age 15. Born in Lagos and raised in South London, she has consistently used her platform to bridge cultural gaps, as seen in her 2023 track DISTURBING U with Ayra Starr, which gained traction for its vibrant visuals.

While the new single’s details remain under wraps, the timing of the release, mid-May could position it as a contender for summer playlists, especially with festival season approaching. Yet, as Afrobeats continues to globalize, some critics question whether artistes like Darkoo risk diluting their cultural roots to appeal to Western audiences, a tension that may surface as her new music drops tomorrow at 8 PM GMT.
