Meet Jelanee, The Rising Voice Turning Emotions Into Music
Jelanee

Emerging Ghanaian singer, Jelanee, is steadily carving her space in the music industry with a blend of vulnerability, purpose and powerful storytelling.

Speaking on Culture Daily, the young artiste opened up about her journey, revealing that “Jelanee” isn’t her birth name, but a carefully chosen stage identity rooted in meaning.

Originally known as A.G. Wilson, the singer made a deliberate shift after realising the name created misconceptions about her identity.

“I looked at my qualities; my sound, my presence and chose something that represents me,” she explained.

“Jelanee,” a Swahili name, translates to purpose and power, qualities she believes define both her personality and her artistry.

Beyond the mic, Jelanee describes herself as someone who naturally steps into leadership roles. From school group leadership to currently managing an undisclosed institution, she says these traits have consistently shaped her path.

Like many artistes, Jelanee’s musical roots trace back to her childhood.

“I was the noisemaker in the house, I was always singing,” she laughed.

Her journey progressed from singing at home to church, and later into school, at Ghana Senior High School. There, she earned recognition as Best Female Vocalist.

Interestingly, she didn’t initially plan to pursue music professionally.

That changed in 2021 when a friend invited her to the studio.

“After a few sessions, I realised I could actually do this seriously,” she said.

Determined to grow, Jelanee joined the Voice Factory music reality show on Citi FM, describing it as a defining learning experience.

She credits her music director, for toughening her up and refining her artistry.

“He didn’t follow my tears he just did his job. And it made me stronger.”

Jelanee’s music is deeply personal, often inspired by real-life emotions and experiences.

Her song MY TYPE explores the confusion of liking someone who gives mixed signals.

“It’s about feeling something strong for someone and they say they feel the same but their actions don’t match,” she explained.

The song was inspired by a real-life crush, adding authenticity to her storytelling.

Her latest release, CAN’T DENY, featuring Larry Bills, shifts slightly in theme drawing from friendship and loyalty, then blending it into a relatable love narrative.

She describes music as the easiest part of her life.
