As the world races toward 2025, Ethiopia –one of the few African countries never colonized is stepping into 2017, adhering to its own unique timeline rooted deeply in its heritage and traditions. Unlike the Gregorian calendar followed globally, Ethiopia uses its own calendar, which is seven to eight years behind.

Ethiopians believe that God created the earth in September, as mentioned in the Bible, and their calendar reflects this belief. The country celebrates Enkutatash, a public holiday that marks the Ethiopian New Year, on Meskerem 1 – equivalent to September 11 on the Gregorian calendar (or September 12 in a leap year).

Enkutatash, which means “gift of jewels,” is a time of renewal, joy, and community. The holiday is marked with church services, feasts, and singing. Children often go door to door, singing traditional songs and handing out drawings in exchange for gifts.

This celebration highlights Ethiopia's commitment to preserving its cultural identity and unique history while standing apart from the rest of the world, even as it keeps pace with modern advancements.
