British actor Idris Elba, known for his roles in The Wire and Luther, has revealed his intention to move to Africa within the next decade to support the continent’s film industry. At 52, Elba, who was born in London to a Ghanaian mother and a Sierra Leonean father, has deep connections to Africa. He is leading efforts to establish film studios in Zanzibar and Accra, Ghana.

In a conversation with BBC Elba expressed his commitment to becoming part of Africa’s storytelling tradition, stating that he plans to settle in African cities like Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar over the next five to ten years. He aims to help amplify authentic African narratives.

Elba, who portrayed Nelson Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom (2013), stressed that Africans should lead the film industry, from production to distribution, to offer the world a richer understanding of the continent, beyond its history of slavery and colonization. Although Nollywood in Nigeria is thriving, Elba pointed out that Africa’s film industry lacks proper infrastructure, citing a 2022 Unesco report that identified gaps in training and resources.

His planned studios and initiatives aim to address these challenges and help Africans take ownership of their stories, fostering global appreciation for the continent’s rich cultural diversity. Elba emphasized the power of representation in cinema, stating, WHEN YOU SEE ME, YOU SEE A LITTLE VERSION OF YOURSELF, AND THAT INSPIRES US. He believes investing in African storytelling is key to promoting the continent’s vibrant narratives.
