Creative entrepreneur, Kofi Turkson, has announced the launch of the Creative DNA Programme, a 16-week fashion accelerator initiative delivered by My Runway Group in partnership with the British Council Ghana.
Speaking in a live studio interview with the Culture Squad, Turkson described the programme as a strategic intervention designed to reposition fashion as a structured, scalable and globally competitive business sector not merely a creative passion.
According to Turkson, the core objective of Creative DNA is to demonstrate that fashion can operate as a sustainable economic enterprise.
“The goal is to prove that fashion is a viable business. It’s not just vibes. It’s not just for you and your family,” he explained.
The accelerator, which has previously been piloted in East Africa, will select 50 Ghanaian fashion entrepreneurs for an intensive training programme focused on transforming unstructured operations into scalable businesses.
Turkson noted that Ghana’s domestic fashion market, while vibrant, remains relatively small on a global scale. By opening international channels, the perceived market saturation can be alleviated.
“When you create pipelines to global markets, you expand opportunity. Then it doesn’t feel saturated anymore,” he said.
The programme also integrates sustainable fashion practices into its curriculum. Turkson highlighted the growing global shift away from fast fashion and the importance of responsible sourcing, waste reduction and long-term product durability.
With Ghana often cited as a recipient of second-hand clothing waste from global markets, Turkson stressed the need for local designers to adopt environmentally conscious production models and reclaim value within the supply chain.
Applications are open until March 22. Eligible applicants must: be registered fashion-related businesses, operate within sectors such as apparel, textiles, accessories or streetwear and demonstrate export potential and commitment to quality.
Turkson clarified that perfection is not required. “We’re not looking for perfect businesses. We’re looking for potential,” he stated.
The pilot will serve as proof of concept, to attract larger investments into Ghana’s fashion ecosystem upon successful completion.
My Runway Group, which has operated for over 12 years, has facilitated partnerships with international institutions including the Mayor of London’s office, the British Museum and global arts platforms. Turkson says the organisation’s mission remains consistent: connecting African talent to global opportunities.
