Manchester City will attempt to keep their Premier League title hopes alive tonight when they host Crystal Palace in a high-stakes clash at the Etihad Stadium.
City heads into the fixture trailing league leaders Arsenal by five points with a game in hand and only three matches left in the season. A victory against Palace would cut Arsenal’s advantage to two points and maintain pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side heading into the closing days of the campaign.
A draw, however, would leave City four points behind with only two matches remaining, significantly weakening their chances of retaining the title. Defeat could effectively hand the initiative firmly to Arsenal, who would remain five points clear.
For Arsenal, City dropping points would move the North London club closer to a first league title in years. But a City win would ensure the title race remains open heading into the final rounds of the season.
The pressure surrounding the fixture was evident during Tuesday’s pre-match press conferences, where City manager Pep Guardiola repeatedly stressed the importance of focusing solely on Crystal Palace rather than outside controversies.
Speaking after renewed debate over VAR decisions following Arsenal’s controversial 1-0 win over West Ham, Guardiola criticised the consistency of officiating but insisted City must look inward.
“We lost the two FA Cup finals because the referees didn’t do their job,” Guardiola said. “I have never trusted anything [with VAR] since I arrived a long time ago.”
Despite the criticism, the Spaniard refused to make officiating the central issue ahead of Wednesday’s match.
“You have to do it better yourself,” he said. “That is Crystal Palace, focus, focus and focus.”
Guardiola also admitted the title race is no longer fully in City’s hands.
“Only we can do what we have to do and do it better. That is only in our control,” he said.
The City manager warned against underestimating Palace, who have developed a reputation for frustrating top sides and still have a Europa Conference League final approaching later this month.
“They are so professional. Crystal Palace will play top against us,” Guardiola said. “The quality is there. The patterns are there.”
City are also monitoring the fitness of midfielder Rodri and defender Abdukodir Khusanov ahead of the match. Guardiola confirmed both players are “better” and would be assessed before kickoff.
On the other side, Palace manager Oliver Glasner made it clear his decisions would be based entirely on Crystal Palace’s interests rather than the title ambitions of Arsenal or Manchester City.
“I’m responsible for Crystal Palace and I get paid for doing the best things for Crystal Palace and not for City and not for Arsenal,” Glasner said.
The Austrian also acknowledged Palace’s unusual position in potentially influencing the title race while balancing preparations for a European final.
“If City win all three games they have a chance. If Arsenal win both games, they are champions,” Glasner said.
Crystal Palace could yet become decisive figures in the title race, with Arsenal also set to face the Eagles in one of the final fixtures of the season. Guardiola believes Palace will remain highly competitive regardless of squad rotation.
“So I’m pretty sure they will do their best even though they have a final a few days later,” he said.
