The National Democratic Congress (NDC) transition team has raised concerns over a last-minute GH₵240 million payment to an entity linked to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and rushed recruitments across ministries. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the team, highlighted these issues during the first day of the transition process.
“We’ve seen documentation relating to efforts to pay over GH₵240 million to an entity that conducted business with ECG. This payment’s timing and magnitude could have severe fiscal implications for the incoming administration,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.
He emphasized the need to suspend the payment pending thorough scrutiny, adding that while payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) might be justifiable to sustain power supply, the specific transaction under review appeared non-critical.
Additionally, Kwakye Ofosu expressed concern over last-minute recruitments in various ministries, warning that such actions would impose unnecessary financial and administrative burdens on the incoming government. “Good governance requires that the incoming government is given the opportunity to make these decisions,” he stressed.
The outgoing administration has agreed to suspend the payment and discuss the issues further in a meeting scheduled for Friday. The NDC team has vowed to advocate for broader consultations and transparency to prevent what they described as “a dangerous precedent” in governance transitions.
This development underscores the challenges of ensuring fiscal prudence and accountability during government transitions. The incoming administration remains focused on ensuring a smooth and transparent handover process.
